It is part of my job to assure that our programs are evidence-based and working...I absolutely see myself using what CHAMP learns to do my work for PHMDC, prioritizing areas of service, determining need for outreach, and tailoring the actual services we provide to meet the needs and perceptions of individual neighborhoods and communities.
I see my research responsibility to reside squarely within the realm of geographic data collection and dissemination. This involves both the technical implementation of a system to help facilitate CHAMP's research goals, as well as the theoretical grounding in Geography and GIS needed to support CHAMP's mission.
In public health, our work with communities is so significant. Population health outcomes will not improve if we don't ground our research in communities (what they think/perceive to be barriers/assets to health – broadly defined and with a prevention focus). So, my biggest commitment is to make sure the work we do with community folks is of highest quality.
Also, my vision and mission for my career is to work with community people (youth and adults) to gain understanding about assets and barriers to health and present back to decision makers and stakeholders – change policy. This can be PPM, plain-old focus groups, community assessments, etc...as long as it is community anchored.
Finally, I see my roll in CHAMP as a networker - pulling folks together and making sure we continue to mobilize and gain momentum and build upon existing energy. Exciting!!
As a geographer I focus on the relationship between place(the built environment, landscape)and health and well-being. This includes using PPM and other qualitative community-based research methods to better understand this relationship.
As a landscape architect I focus on our collective efforts to create more healthful places in which to live, work and play! This includes actions/interventions in the environment (such as designing parks and play spaces) as well as policy actions that shape the built environment.
